About Building Young Writers
Every writer begins with a single sentence.
Building Young Writers is a classroom writing programme designed to help young English learners become clearer, more confident and more independent communicators.
Writing is more than putting words on a page. It helps students organise their ideas, notice how language works, choose better vocabulary and express what they really mean.
What We Practise
- building complete and interesting sentences
- choosing stronger vocabulary
- organising ideas into paragraphs
- using punctuation and capital letters correctly
- improving grammar and sentence structure
- describing people, places, actions and events
- editing and improving their own writing
- giving helpful and respectful feedback
- developing their own voice as a writer
Most importantly, students learn that writing is a process. Writers think, try, make mistakes, edit and improve.
What Is This Website For?
This website is the online home of Building Young Writers. Students can use it after class to revisit what we learned, review important vocabulary, look at examples and practise a skill again at their own pace.
The Grade 5 and Grade 6 areas follow what we are learning in class. The Writer’s Toolkit gives extra help with sentences, paragraphs, punctuation, vocabulary and editing, while the Writer’s Challenges offer optional extra practice.
This is not another textbook. It is a place students can return to whenever they need a reminder, a little more practice, or another chance to improve.
